Updated: LASU poised to produce 153 First Class Graduands in 2024 convocation ceremonies

  The Lagos State University, LASU Ojo is poised to produce 153 First Class Graduands at the ongoing 27th convocation ceremonies, Orangesprings Blog reports. Orangesprings notes that the number shows an uptrend as against 112 first class graduates produced in March 2022 .   A school teacher has been found guilty of having sex with two schoolboys after a trial at Manchester Crown Court. Rebecca Joynes, 30, was convicted of four counts of sexual activity with a child and two counts of sexual activity with another child, by a jury at Manchester Crown Court. Friends and supporters of ex-student of Osun State Polytechnic, Iree, Osun State, Samson Ajao, who was attempting to set a new world record for longest marathon reading aloud on Wednesday, was celebrated on the streets of Osogbo after he hit 215 hours to set a new world record. The convoy that conveyed Ajao and his supporters moved through Gbongan/Osogbo road and Odi-Olowo Street in Osogbo in celebration after he achieved the feat. England’s universities face ‘closure’ risk after student numbers dive

Universities in England face a looming funding crisis as a result of a fall in student applications, with some requiring deep cuts to avoid closure, the sector’s regulator has found. The warning will be issued in the Office for Students’ annual report on the financial health of the sector, which will be published on Thursday morning. The report, extracts of which have been seen by the Financial Times, finds 40 per cent of England’s universities expect to be in deficit in the 2023-24 academic year, with an “increasing number” showing low levels of cash flow.  “An increasing number of providers will need to make significant changes to their funding model in the near future to avoid facing a material risk of closure,” the report will say. The findings come as the higher education sector battles with Rishi Sunak’s government over plans to restrict further the number of lucrative international graduate students who come and study in the UK. University Governing Councils: ASUU gives Tinubu new ultimatum for action

The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) on Tuesday gave President Bola Tinubu a two-week ultimatum to reinstate the dissolved Governing Councils of Nigerian universities. Since President Tinubu dissolved the councils last June, the universities have operated without governing councils and this has continued to affect all public institutions, including polytechnics and colleges of education. In a statement signed by the union’s president, Emmanuel Osodeke, ASUU described the dissolution as illegal and contrary to the Universities Miscellaneous Act. The union affirmed that the ‘illegal dissolution’ has paved the way for illegalities in the Nigerian university system. Therefore, ASUU has urged President Tinubu to reinstate those whose tenure had yet to elapse and reconstitute those whose tenure had elapsed.

A Nigerian female engineer, Oluwami Dosunmu-Ogunbi, has made history by becoming the first black woman to earn a doctorate degree also known as PhD in Robotics at the University of Michigan, United States. Dosunmu-Ogunjobi made this known on Saturday, while speaking at the University of Michigan’s College of Engineering convocation, on the roles of mentors and advocates in realising her aspirations. Ekiti varsity expels two students over assault of girl in viral video

The management of the Bamidele Olumilua University of Education Science and Technology Ikere-Ekiti (BOUESTI) has expelled a female student caught in a viral video flogging her colleague. On Monday, a clip circulated on X which captured the student assaulting her colleague with a cane. In the footage, the perpetrator is heard screaming at the victim, saying: “I want to see you fight back. You called me a bastard? Is it because I have kept silent? I must draw blood from you today and no one can stop me”. The victim is seen running to safety while being chased by her attacker. The video also captured several individuals present during the assault, yet no one attempted to intervene. The footage provoked outrage on social media, with users calling on the institution to investigate the incident. The University of Edinburgh has announced a new research partnership with the Institute for Advanced Studies in the Humanities (IASH) which offers £2,500 monthly bursary at its 90th Anniversary Research Fellowship This is according to a communique released Monday on its website. The communique reads: We are awarding two 12-month fellowships starting in January 2025 –open to postdoctoral researchers based in any ODA (Official Development Assistance) recipient country where the British Council operates (see 'Eligibility' section below). Fellows will spend the first ten months of their fellowships at IASH, followed by up to two months based in their home countries focused on knowledge exchange and dissemination in collaboration with the British Council. JAMB finally releases withheld results of 531 candidates out of 64,000

The Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board has released additional 531 results of the recently conducted Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examinations taking the total number of results released to 1,842,897. This information is contained in a statement by the Public Communication Advisor of the Board, Dr Fabian Benjamin on Tuesday in Abuja. Benjamin said the Board had proceeded with the screening of over 64,000 withheld results due to cases of examination misconduct. “In the course of the exercise, other cases of examination misconduct were also established to make a tally of 92 from the 81 initially discovered,” he said. He further explained that the Board was also looking at cases of unverified candidates and would soon come up with a position. He added that the attention of the Board had been drawn to some fallacious publications purporting that an unknown candidate, who did not sit for the Board’s 2024 UTME obtained scores. School attacked, teacher assaulted by family members of student over flogging child in Port Harcourt

There was pandemonium on Monday morning at Silver Bird International School at Agip, Mile 4, area of Port Harcourt as members of a family of J.S.S.1 student identified as Favour assaulted a female teacher for allegedly flogging their child. Members of the angry family who invaded the school also locked up the Administrative officer, Joy Ajayi, inside her office while threatening to beat her up over claims that their child was flogged inappropriately by the teacher. It was not clear why Favour was punished by the teacher. LASU Inter'l school students dust UTME, score 341, others; amid JAMB mass failure

By Seun Gbanja    Students of the Lagos State University International School (LASUIS) have again justified the excellent quality of teaching and learning the school offers as they shone brightly in this year's Joint Admission and Matriculation Board (JAMB) United Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME) which result was recently released by the body. Of the results of 40 students of the School that have been released by the examination body, 40 of them scored 200 marks and above out of 400 marks, which translates to 100% pass rate. NECO supervisors to apply online as council digitalizes recruitment

The National Examinations Council has  said its decision to transition to a digitalised recruitment process for examination supervisors and assistant supervisors is to address sharp practices. Orangesprings Blog understands that before now, NECO conducted a manual examination to recruit supervisors for both the Basic Education Certificate Examination and the Senior School Certificate Examination. NECO, responsible for administering the Senior Secondary Certificate Examination and the General Certificate in Education, in June/July and November/December, respectively, said the move would enhance efficiency and effective service delivery. In a statement obtained on Sunday, NECO said the digitalisation involved shifting from manual to online recruitment procedures. BREAKING: UTME results error codes are sent to candidates whose scores are withheld --JAMB

The error codes received from the short code (55019) by some random candidates have been said to be associated with examinees whose UTME results have been withheld, according to JAMB sources. According to the source, "Perhaps there are enough evidence against them that they were involved in examination infractions." "Please be aware that the withheld result won't be released, however, the one under investigation might be, if not found guilty thereafter." The Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board also urged Nigerians to be wary of any candidate parading printed result slips as, currently, the results are not in any paper format. The body also said that, unlike last year, the results cannot be found on the Board’s website at the moment. Cut off marks of LASU, UNILAG, UI, other universities unveiled amid 2024 UTME mass failure

University cut off marks have been complied in this report, following the mass failure of the 2024 edition of the Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination which was held last month. The list comprises the benchmark unveiled last year 2023, as that of the current year would be added as soon as it is released. Vice-Chancellors of Nigerian universities present at the 2023 policy meeting of the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board agreed on 140 as the minimum benchmark for the admissions of 2023/2024 academic session. However, universities are at liberty to decide individual cut-off marks but no university will be allowed to admit any candidate who scores below the 140 benchmark, JAMB registrar, Prof.Ishaq Oloyede, made this known during the 2023 policy meeting ongoing in Abuja.
