Lagos Gov okays LASU staff unions request amidst strike threats

Gideon Adonai   The Lagos State Government has approved the demands of the Joint Action Committee (JAC) of University Staff Unions, following the strike action initiated on Friday, December 6, 2024. The unions, which include ASUU, SSANU, NASU, and NAAT, had presented their requests through the university management to the state government. The Steering Committee considered the demands and submitted recommendations, which were approved by the Lagos State Executive Council (EXCO) as follows: 1. Increase in Subvention: a. That the Lagos State Government (LASG) will bear half of the total sum of N209,876,162.7 (Two Hundred and Nine Million, Eight Hundred and Seventy-Six Thousand, One Hundred and Sixty-Two Naira, and Seventy-Five Kobo) being the shortfall in respect of the increment in the wages of its workforce, both academic and non-academic staff. b. LASU unions insist on salary harmonisation, threaten prolonged strike

The Joint Action Committee of all staff unions in Lagos State University has resolved to continue its ongoing strike action until the university management addresses its demands on salary harmonisation and increment. The unions, comprising the Academic Staff Union of Universities, Senior Staff Association of Nigerian Universities, National Association of Academic Technologists, and Non-Academic Staff Union, rejected the new salary structure proposed by the university management. In a statement signed by the chairmen and secretaries of the unions, they demanded that the university management provide a template for the new salary structure to enable them to determine its financial implications. The unions also demanded that the December salary and 2024 end-of-year bonus be paid based on the existing salary structure, considering the upcoming festivities. LASU outshines 49 universities in Sub Saharan Africa

According to the latest UI ranking, LASU is also retaining its coveted slot as the Best University in Nigeria for two consecutive years (2022 and 2023). In an announcement that was made through a live broadcast from Universidade São Paulo by the global ranking body on Thursday, 12th December 2024, the Lagos State -owned institution has also emerged the 23rd best university in Africa from the 25th spot, and 709th from 761st global position it held in 2023. Covenant University emerges first in inter-disciplinary science research in West Africa

  Covenant University, Ota Ogun State says it emerged the best West African University in Inter-disciplinary Science Research Ranking for 2025 in Times Higher Education. The institution’s Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Abiodun Adebayo, made the announcement in a statement on Friday in Ota. He said the university has with this continued to retain an eminent status as an institution in a class of its own. “The university emerged as first in Nigeria and West Africa, third in Africa, and 73rd globally by the recent ranking of Times Higher Education,” Adebayo said. University fees in England to rise next autumn for first time in eight years

University tuition fees in England are to go up for the first time in eight years, taking annual payments up to a record £9,535 per student, the government has announced. The inflation-linked increase, which comes into force in the next academic year, was approved by ministers after warnings of a deepening financial crisis in the university sector, where the value of tuition fees has crumbled after being capped at £9,250 since 2017. To help soften the blow, Bridget Phillipson also announced a parallel increase to student maintenance loans, providing up to £414 extra per year to support students from the lowest-income families. Second Series of 2024 WASSCE (GCE) set to commence Friday

The West African Examinations Council has confirmed that the Computer-Based West African Senior School Certificate Examination for Private Candidates, 2024– Second Series will begin from Friday, October 25 to Friday, December 20, 2024. A statement by WAEC on Tuesday said the examination would adopt the hybrid mode of delivering the examination, adding that the registration period had been extended to Tuesday, October 29, 2024. It said, “The examination will adopt the hybrid mode of delivering the examination, which implies that, the objective or multiple-choice questions would be rendered on-screen and candidates would be required to give their responses on the screen, while the essay and practical questions will be rendered on-screen, likewise, but candidates would have to give their responses using the answer booklets provided. UNILORIN wins JAMB ₦500m Merit Award

JAMB announces 140 as minimum cut off mark for university admission , polytechnic stands at 100

Heads of higher institutions of learning, on Thursday, pegged the minimum benchmark for admissions for tertiary institutions at 140 for universities, 100 for polytechnics and colleges of education. They took the position at the 2024 policy meeting organised by the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board in Abuja. JAMB Registrar, Prof. Ishaq Oloyede, explained that there was nothing like a cut-off mark but only the minimum tolerable score out of the total mark of 400 in the Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination. Each university forwarded its benchmark scores to JAMB ahead of the Thursday policy meeting. Oloyede said while institutions had the liberty to admit students based on the minimum scores they submit to JAMB, no institution was allowed to admit any candidate with a score below 140. Over 62,000 UTME candidates to battle for LASU admissions as varsity tops most subscribed chart

LASU now stands out as the second most subscribed university in Nigeria.  This is based on the 2024 Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination Application Statistics by Institutions released by the Joint Admission and Matriculation Board on Wednesday, 17th July 2024. WAEC's GCE registrations commence for 2024 second series

By Gideon Adonai The West African Examinations Council (WAEC) has commenced registration for the 2024 West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE) for private candidates, second series, commonly called GCE. Interested candidates can now register online for the November December diet. Candidates are advised to carefully read the registration guidelines and requirements before proceeding to register. Candidates can register online and make payments at any of the designated banks or accredited agents. They can also explore cashless payment channels to procure registration tokens with credit/debit cards. Candidates with special needs are also required to register online and indicate their impairments. Walk-in candidates will be accommodated, but they must register at least 24 hours before the scheduled examination time. WAEC GCE 2nd Series 2024 examination will be computer-based.

FUTA gets full accreditation for 18 academic programmes [ Full List]

The accreditation is valid for five years commencing from the 2023/2024 academic session in accordance with the Core Curriculum Minimum Academic Standard (CCMAS).
