The green leaves made mellifluous melodies of honour into the porches of ears of thousands of elated newly matriculating students of the Lagos State University, LASU, Ojo, on Tuesday 18th February as the most subscribed university in Nigeria after University of Ilorin celebrated its newest freshers.

Orangesprings Blog shares delightful highlights of the event.

12,590, close to last year's figure

LASU admitted more students in its 2023/2024 matriculation than this year's. The tally last year was 12,873, as against 12,590.

The data, taken in comparison against 2022 matriculation number, 6377, shows that LASU is maintaining a trajectory of growth as the institution conspicuously strove to strike a balance, despite biting inflation and low purchasing power embattling Nigeria and other countries. The figures are considerably high for LASU who takes advantage of a large expanse of land, and other admission deciding factors against the University of Lagos, (UNILAG), Akoka which matriculated only 8,448, out of 53,000 applicants in the year 2024.

60,000 applicants milestone

LASU is undeniably on a massive trajectory after its number of applicants for the year was only second to that of the University of Ilorin, Kwara State.

The University of Ilorin (UNILORIN) admitted 12,630 new students for the 2020/2021 academic session. This was out of 102,000 applicants who applied through the Joint Admission and Matriculation Board (JAMB).

LASU 's Vice Chancellor, Professor Ibeyemi Ibilola Olatunji-Bello, mni, fnli, NPOM declared that over 60,000 candidates made LASU their first choice in the last Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination, UTME. A piece of data also available on JAMB' bulletin.

Top Five on 2025Higher Times Education Ranking

According to the 2025 Times Higher Education (THE) World University Rankings, LASU ranked fifth among Nigerian institutions which emerged as the most prestigious, setting the pace for quality education and groundbreaking research. Meanwhile, according to Greenmetrics, LASU ranks 9th Overall among 298 universities in Nigeria, and has been recognized as the best university in West Africa.

Establishment of SGBV Response

Apart from having zero tolerance for indecent dressing and frivolity, LASU has also established a Directorate of Response and Preventive of Sexual and Gender based violence in order to check Sexual and Gender based violence. The Vice Chancellor hinted February that perpetrators shall not be spared by the university management.
