LASU JUPEB / School of Basic and Advanced Studies opens portal for 2024/2025 admissions

By Gideon Adonai   The Lagos State University,  (LASU) Ojo has opened portal for admissions into the Lagos State University School of Basic and Advanced Studies [JUPEB Programme] which commences June 2024. This is according to a communique released Friday June 28, 2024.  Orangesprings Blog understands that the Programme runs for one Academic Session beginning from September 2024 to August 2025.  It is an intensive programme to prepare exceptionally brilliant candidates for admission into the 200 level degree programmes offered by JUPEB. 2.0 ADMISSION REQUIREMENTS (a) Five (5) Ordinary Level Credits to include English Language. Schools in US state ordered to teach Bible lessons in classrooms immediately

By Gideon Adonai   Oklahoma's top education official has ordered schools in the state to begin incorporating the Bible into lessons, in the latest US cultural flashpoint over religion in the classroom. A directive sent by Republican state Superintendent Ryan Walters said adherence to the rule was compulsory, requiring "immediate and strict compliance". The rule will apply to lessons for all public school students aged from around 11-18. It comes a week after Louisiana's governor signed a law directing all public schools in that state to display the Ten Commandments. In a statement on Thursday, Mr Walters described the Bible as "an indispensable historical and cultural touchstone". "Without basic knowledge of it, Oklahoma students are unable to properly contextualize the foundation of our nation, which is why Oklahoma educational standards provide for its instruction," he added. University to handle delinquent UNILAG student fighting lecturer in viral video, Kappo says

By Gideon Adonai The university will definitely handle the case of a delinquent student allegedly linked with the University of Lagos, UNILAG, who was filmed in a vital video fighting lecturer. This is according to a terse statement posted to Orangesprings Blog on Thursday night by the Senior Special Adviser to Lagos State on Students' Affairs, Mr Samuel Olawale Kappo. Kappo is an alumnus of the prestigious Lagos State University, LASU and the Lagos State Students Union (LASUSU) president in the 2016/2017 academic session. In the viral video, a yet-to-be-identified university student was spotted pushing a lecturer on the chest . According to the video shared by Yabaleftonline, the student forcefully pushed the lecturer on the chest after the lecturer also had also been seen dragging the student out of the class. LASU academic, 17 others get $250k research grants

Babalola, has emerged as one of the eighteen (18) academics from tertiary institutions in Nigeria to receive a grant of $250,000 from the Science Granting Councils Initiative (SGCI) to develop four prototype projects into commercially viable products.  The academics went through the Tertiary Education Trust Fund (TETFund)’s Research for Impact Initiative (R4I) to win the grants. JAMB to set new cut off mark for UTME 2024 admissions

The Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) will hold its policy meeting on July 18 where it will determine the cut-off marks for the 2024 admissions.  In its weekly bulletin released on Monday, JAMB said the meeting will be chaired by the Minister of Education Tahir Mamman. Other stakeholders in the education sector are also billed to attend. The management of LASUTH spoke to in response to the death of five persons and hospitalisation of scores of others showing symptoms of the disease in Lagos, saying it has put its healthcare workers on red alert and other stakeholders on notice in readiness for a possible spread. LASU renews accreditation of 44 courses with NUC [Full List]

  By Gideon Adonai The Lagos State University has made a significant progress, shortly after 27th convocation ceremonies as the most sought-after varsity secures accreditation for all the forty-four (44) courses submitted for the National Universities Commission accreditation exercise held between October and November, 2023. The Vice Chancellor, Prof. Ibiyemi Olatunji-Bello, mni, NPOM made the information known when she received results of the accreditation exercise via a letter from the NUC dated 6th June 2024 signed by Engr Abraham Chundusu for the Executive Secretary.  The result showed that 43 of the 44 courses assessed secured full accreditation with only one course - Computer Science Education, getting interim accreditation.  All the other courses with full accreditation include: 1. BRAKING Malawi VP found dead among nine others in crashed plane

  Malawi’s Vice President Saulos Chilima has been killed in a plane crash along with nine other passengers, the country’s President Lazarus Chakwera announced Tuesday. The aircraft went missing after it failed to land at the Mzuzu International Airport, about 380 km (240 miles) to the north of the capital Lilongwe. The wreckage of the plane has been located, Chakwera said Tuesday. “The search and rescue operation I ordered to find the missing plane that carried our vice president and nine others has been completed. The plane has been found. And I am deeply saddened and sorry to inform you that it has turned out to be a terrible tragedy,” Chakwera said.

Howard University revokes honorary degree previously conferred on Sean Diddy

The school’s decision follows a series of alarming accusations against the rapper, along with recently unearthed surveillance video of the 54-year-old physically assaulting his ex-girlfriend Cassie Ventura in a brutal 2016 incident at a Los Angeles hotel. “Mr. Combs’ behavior as captured in a recently released video is so fundamentally incompatible with Howard University’s core values and beliefs that he is deemed no longer worthy to hold the institution’s highest honor,” the university said in a statement published in the school’s newspaper. The Lagos State Governor and Visitor to the university, Mr Babajide Olusshola Sanwo-Olu, has rewarded the overall best student of the Lagos State University (LASU) Olawale Mubarak Olaniyi with ₦10 million. The governor made this announcement at the university’s 27th Convocation in Lagos on Thursday. Mubarak, from the department of accounting education, graduated with cumulative grade point average of 4.98 in the 2022/2023 academic session.

JUST IN: [Minimum wage] NLC, TUC finally suspend strike

Members of the organised labour comprising the Nigeria Labour Congress and Trade Union Congress, on Tuesday, suspended their strike for five days, a leader of the NLC told our correspondent in Abuja. The centres are expected to issue a statement shortly before the commencement of negotiations with the government. The strike which commenced on Monday was called to protest the failure of the Federal Government to approve new minimum wage by May 31 as well as its failure to reverse the hike in electricity tariff. Suya Certificate not LASU property: Official Statement

The management of the Lagos State University, LASU has responded promptly to a social media post making the rounds about a LASU Degree Certificate allegedly found at a ‘SUYA spot'.  According to a statement obtained by this blog, the most sought-after State University had recovered the ‘certificate’ on Wednesday, 21st November, 2018, invalidated it immediately. The statement reads in parts:    The ‘certificate’ in question actually exist but was invalidated on 25th February, 2013 because the graduate’s surname was wrongly written on the ‘certificate’ as ABISOYE instead of ABIOYE . The University had issued another certificate carrying the correct surname and this was collected by the graduate on the 30th of September, 2014. By the University’s standard practice, the invalidated certificate ought to have been shredded immediately the certificate was re-issued with the correct surname. ASUU joins NLC, TUC nationwide strike action

The Academic Staff Union of Universities has joined the ongoing strike by the organised labour comprising Nigeria Labour Congress and Trade Union Congress. This is coming after the Federal Government failed to meet the unions’ minimum wage demand. In a statement addressed to the branch chairpersons and zonal coordinators of ASUU on Monday, the association’s President, Emmanuel Osodeke, directed lecturers in universities across the country to join the strike as an affiliate of the congress. The statement read, “The NLC has declared an indefinite strike action beginning from Monday, 3rd June, 2024, as a result of the failure of Government to conclude the renegotiation of minimum wage for Nigerian workers and reversal of hike in electricity tariff. “Our branches are hereby enjoined to join in the strike action as an affiliate member of Congress. “Consequently, branch chairpersons are to mobilise all members to participate in the strike action.
